I think that of the most important events that bring hope to mankind are New Years and Cup Finals. New Year brings the start of something new, of new goals, new aspirations and a renewed spirit to work on the new goals. Spirits light up and you throw away old habits of procrastination and setbacks. You sing auld lang syne and you ask your friend so whats your resolution this year? Den in the end how many of us live up to it? And yet at the moment we make it…we have so much hope and belief.
Now on to cup finals. Cup finals inspire the best in sportsmen and women. Wimbledon 01 – Ivanisevic vs Rafter. Champions League 05- the Stevie G final. Euro 04 – The spirit of sparta lives in greece. You realise you have come so far and feeling on top of the world is only one victory away, you put in your best, you produce your peak performance because not making it costs a lot more pain then that painful process of making it. Hernando Cortes, the famed Portuguese explorer reached a shore of battle once. He was low on supplies, his soldiers had a plague and he was facing incessant barrages of fire from the enemy. How did he react? He asked his soldiers to burn their boats. And made the cost of losing the price of it even higher. And so it is during cup finals. What does each coach say to his troops before they step out to battle on the field. They say lets do it cos theres no turning back. And so many have delivered because they wanted that victory so much more.
So why must we wait for that fateful day on New Year to make resolutions and that fateful date in January or May for the cup final? Cant we make each day like a New Year to us and play each day like a cup fina? And when we begin each day with hope and belief and end each day with the sweet taste of victory, how will that change our lives? Now we can say Everybody Dance Now because each day we will be move to the beat of piloting our own destinies and celebrating life worth living. For while others merely exist, we can make a choice to truly live.
And perhaps for 2008 this is not my New Years Resolution…but merely my new tagline!
